Team Fortress 2 update refreshes cp_holyhell

A new Team Fortress 2 update delivers several technical fixes and changes the visuals, timer, and spell flow on cp_holyhell.

How the update is applied

The Team Fortress 2 update published on October 16, 2026 does not require players to begin a separate installation process. It is applied automatically after the game is restarted. Anyone who still has an older session open should therefore only need to close Team Fortress 2 and launch it again before the new fixes become active.

The listed work falls into two broad groups. The first covers general corrections, including inaccurate play-time tracking on some maps and a problem with the Cozy Camper backpack image. The larger set focuses on cp_holyhell. Its changes address an HDR rendering fault, add further visual work to key areas, and revise how spells interact with control of the middle point and the round timer.

Play-time tracking and the Cozy Camper image

The patch fixes an issue that prevented some maps from tracking play time correctly. After the update, time spent on the affected maps is intended to be recorded as expected. The announcement does not say that previously recorded totals will be recalculated, however, so players should not assume that an incorrect historical figure will automatically change.

An alpha-channel problem in the updated backpack image for the Cozy Camper has also been corrected. An alpha channel controls which portions of an image appear transparent or partially transparent. This is a repair to the item’s visual asset rather than a change to its weapon behavior or balance. The visible difference should therefore concern how the Cozy Camper image is presented in the backpack, not how the weapon operates during a match.

A cleaner visual pass for cp_holyhell

The first cp_holyhell adjustments concern presentation. A bug could prevent the skybox on the BLU side from rendering for players who had HDR enabled; the update fixes that specific case. It is a targeted but useful correction for anyone using high-dynamic-range rendering, since that side of the map should now display its background as intended.

The RED side has received an improved art pass, and the visual work around the middle point has been improved as well. The notes do not identify individual surfaces, props, or other assets affected by these passes. They also do not describe new routes, geometry, or sight lines, so those kinds of gameplay changes should not be inferred. The confirmed scope is limited to visual refinements on the RED side and around middle.

Middle control now shapes the spell flow

The most substantial gameplay adjustment concerns spells. Spells become enabled and continue to respawn on the side belonging to the team that loses middle. The rule can work in either direction, meaning the spell location is not permanently tied to RED or BLU. Instead, it responds to which team has lost control of the central objective. This connects the fight for middle directly to the availability of the map’s spell resources.

The round timer has also been reduced to five minutes. Once five minutes have passed after either team captures middle, the round no longer moves into a stalemate at that point. Every spell changes into a rare variant instead. The timer therefore marks a shift in the conditions of the fight rather than only a route to a tied ending. Watching both middle-point ownership and the remaining time will be the clearest way to follow cp_holyhell’s revised match flow.
