Operation Mooncrash War Paint Contest Results Revealed
Operation Mooncrash has selected its War Paint grand winners and runners-up. Submissions remain open, while the Map Assets deadline has been extended.
The War Paint contest reaches its results stage
Operation Mooncrash has announced the results of its War Paint Contest for Team Fortress 2. Following the judging process, grand winners and runners-up have been decided, while additional submissions recognized as strong entries have also been highlighted. Rather than covering a game patch, this announcement focuses on community creativity, making it especially relevant to community artists, contest followers, and players interested in new approaches to weapon finishes.
Publishing the results does more than establish the final placements. The chosen work gives creators preparing future submissions a practical reference for the kinds of ideas that stood out during this round. Although the grand winner and runner-up decisions are complete, Operation Mooncrash itself has not closed. The announcement is therefore best understood as the conclusion of one contest phase within a project that continues to accept creative contributions.
How the three judging criteria shaped the review
Entries were considered through three named criteria: Theme Adherence/Concept, Execution, and Personal Preference. Theme Adherence/Concept addresses how meaningfully a War Paint idea connects with Operation Mooncrash and how clearly its central concept comes across. Execution concerns the way that idea is realized as a finished visual submission. Personal Preference openly accounts for the subjective element that remains whenever judges compare creative work.
Together, these criteria show why neither an attention-grabbing concept nor polished execution alone explains the full decision. For participants, the useful lesson is that theme, idea, and presentation need to reinforce one another. The Personal Preference category also makes clear that taste can separate submissions that may otherwise appear similarly accomplished. The results should therefore be read as a selection reflecting several dimensions of judging, not as a universal formula for the only valid kind of War Paint design.
Two collections preserve different views of the contest
The grand winners, runners-up, and other submissions considered particularly strong have been added to the main Operation Mooncrash Collection. As a result, the central collection presents more than a placement table: it brings together a broader curated view of the designs that distinguished themselves. Players and creators can use it to examine notable interpretations of the theme and compare the different visual directions taken by highlighted War Paint entries.
Every submitted work has also been placed in the Entries Collection. Keeping that complete archive separate from the main selection preserves visibility for the entire field without blurring the distinction between highlighted and non-highlighted entries. A design does not need to have received a top placement to remain accessible there. For anyone studying the results, the two collections provide both a focused look at the selected work and a wider picture of the contest's overall creative range.
Submissions continue as Map Assets gets more time
Although this stage of the War Paint Contest now has confirmed results, Operation Mooncrash remains open to new submissions, including additional War Paint work. The announcement is therefore not a final call for artists still developing ideas. Examining the main collection alongside the Entries Collection can offer those creators a useful starting point, showing both the submissions singled out by the judges and the broader variety of approaches already contributed to the project.
The other major update concerns the Map Assets Contest. Its submission deadline has been extended to the end of November, and its prize pool has increased to 330 keys. The longer window gives creators working on map-oriented assets additional time to finish and present their entries. Combined with the larger reward pool, the extension provides a clear new incentive for that part of Operation Mooncrash to keep building momentum after the publication of the War Paint results.
