Rust's Livestock Update Turns Milk and Cream into Survival Resources
Rust's Livestock Update introduces cow and sheep farming, milk processing and a new player-managed production economy. It also expands food, fuel, base defense and monument exploration.
Farms now form a complete production chain
Rust's Livestock Update turns cows and sheep from animals encountered in the world into farm resources that players can actively manage. Both species have needs that must be met and genetic traits that matter when breeding the next generation. By pairing suitable animals, survivors can expand their herds and make livestock a permanent part of base planning.
Cows provide milk, while sheep produce wool; both animals create dung and yield meat, bones and leather when butchered. A single herd can therefore support several systems, from agriculture and equipment production to food supplies. New animal fences and gates make it easier to divide enclosures, control movement and keep the working farm separate from the rest of a compound.
The Stable vendor gives livestock a market value
Grown animals and collected wool can be sold to the Stable vendor. An animal receives a randomized offer, and players may reject it to see two more. Refusing the third offer makes the vendor unwilling to buy that animal for 15 minutes. Wool follows a similar offer process based on the amount presented, with no more than 400 wool considered in one hand-in.
Those restrictions mean that simply building the largest possible herd is not the whole strategy. Players need to balance breeding speed, storage space and the risks involved in traveling to the vendor. Random offers create short-term opportunities, while the cooldown prevents a large stockpile from being converted continuously. A secure enclosure and reliable collection routine may be as valuable as strong genetics.
Four hours of refrigeration splits milk into two resources
Cow's milk can be used directly or stored in a refrigerator for further processing. After four hours of refrigeration, it can be skimmed into skimmed milk and cream. That delay makes electricity and cold-storage capacity part of the farming setup, especially for groups that intend to process milk at scale. An orderly flow from milking to refrigeration will matter more than occasional collection.
The two products serve different roles in Rust's tea system. Milk generally extends the duration of tea effects, whereas cream improves their potency. The resulting Milky and Creamy tea variants let players choose between support that lasts longer and a stronger effect over its active period. The more useful option will depend on the length and risk of the planned activity.
New meals, biofuel and reasons to explore
The culinary side of livestock introduces new beef and mutton items. Shepherd's Pie and Beef Pie also turn those ingredients into more developed meals. Farm animals are therefore not limited to trade or crafting materials: they can supply a food chain that groups prepare before longer jobs away from the safety of their compound.
The Biofuel Generator gives raw or spoiled meat another purpose by converting it into low grade fuel. Production requires manual stirring roughly every 30 minutes, so it is not a completely unattended source of fuel. The update also adds stackable sandbags and new loot rooms at powergrid monuments, creating additional options for defensive construction and new incentives when planning exploration routes.
