Rust Adds New Barriers to Red Keycard Monuments

Rust's Breach and Clear update changes the race for red keycard loot with destructible monument blockers. Tool Cupboard upkeep will also account for group scale.

The route to red-card rooms gets tougher

The standout addition in Rust's Breach and Clear update is a new obstacle called a monument blocker. These barriers appear at monuments with red keycard puzzle rooms and are designed to make valuable loot slightly harder to reach during the opening hours of a fresh wipe. Players will need more than the card and the usual puzzle requirements; at certain locations, they must also remove a physical obstruction before the route is fully open.

Standard blockers require a substantial amount of damage. The developers also say that a handful of weaker versions can be destroyed with melee attacks. That distinction means every monument will not demand the same investment. Scouting teams should identify the blocker first, then weigh the cost in explosives, ammunition, tools, and time against the likely reward beyond it. Information about an already damaged barrier may become nearly as useful as information about enemy movement.

Destroyed blockers do not return

The defining rule is persistence: once a blocker has been destroyed, it does not respawn. The first group to break through therefore changes the route for everybody else on the server. Early clans pay the opening cost, while later arrivals may benefit from the cleared passage. That dynamic could encourage temporary cooperation, opportunistic ambushes, and tighter control of the area surrounding high-value monuments.

If nobody destroys a blocker during its first 24 hours, it will begin to decay. The obstacle therefore does not lock content away for an entire wipe; its strongest effect is concentrated in the opening period. According to the developer note, the aim is not to transform the overall pace of progression, but to add another decision to the early race. Solo players and smaller groups may prefer to observe the site, track damage, and use the opportunity created after a larger team spends the resources required to open it.

Group scaling reaches Tool Cupboard upkeep

The other systemic change concerns Tool Cupboard upkeep. Starting this month, cupboards apply an additional upkeep tax based on group scaling. The short announcement does not provide the full numerical formula, so exact costs will need to be confirmed in live conditions. Even so, large bases and broad teams should recalculate their reserves rather than relying on the consumption rate from previous wipes. Building around an outdated estimate could create an unexpected shortage.

Both changes place more emphasis on planning at the beginning of a wipe. Monument blockers attach a visible cost to the first loot run, while scaled upkeep puts the sustainability of larger compounds under closer scrutiny. Players should scout routes early, watch Tool Cupboard consumption after construction changes, and adjust once detailed figures are available in the official notes.
