Jagex Reconsiders RuneScape Reignited After Veteran Backlash

Jagex is exploring extensive revisions to RuneScape Reignited and says every option remains on the table. The announcement does not confirm a cancellation or delay.

Reignited returns to the drawing board

Jagex announced on October 6 that it is reassessing the current design of RuneScape Reignited. The statement arrived only days after the project was unveiled at RuneFest 2026 and followed strong criticism from long-standing players. The studio apologized for creating the impression that veteran characters and the people behind them were no longer its priority.

The announcement is not a cancellation or a delay. Jagex has not approved a replacement design and is instead examining what it describes as a substantial set of revisions, while keeping every option for Reignited open. The immediate change is therefore not a finalized feature list, but a commitment to put a revised proposal before the community.

Why the fresh-start concept caused concern

Reignited was conceived as a way to attract new and returning players through a fresh economy and a shared progression starting point. Jagex says the original reveal reached more people than expected and generated unusually strong expressions of intent to play on social media. It also acknowledges that this growth opportunity loses its value if existing players feel their years of progress and achievements are being diminished.

The concerns summarized by Jagex extend beyond market balance. Players fear veteran worlds could decline, an already modest population could become fragmented, and staying relevant could feel contingent on starting again. Interaction restrictions between character types, untradeable items and cosmetics remaining tied to veteran accounts, and the need for a separate Reignited membership also contributed to the backlash.

Veteran progress and shared play are under review

One priority is finding additional ways to preserve veteran progress and represent it meaningfully without undermining the new economy that gives Reignited its appeal. Jagex has not explained the technical or economic mechanism it might use. Progress transfers, shared inventories or specific access rights should not be treated as confirmed solutions, because the studio has not promised any of them.

The team also wants to prevent a lasting hard split and allow established players to enjoy RuneScape alongside newcomers. Separate membership is being reconsidered, though Jagex has only said it is exploring possibilities and has not guaranteed a change. The broader goal is to remove social, economic and account-related friction for veterans who want to engage with or coexist beside Reignited.

The next proposal will go to players first

Jagex plans to show its revised proposals to players by the end of the week in which the October 6 statement appeared. The direction taken afterward will depend on that next conversation and the feedback it produces. Details covering membership, character interaction and recognition of veteran achievements will therefore be central to the next update.

The earlier announcement named December 2 as Reignited's launch date, and the new statement does not explicitly change it. It likewise does not confirm a cancellation, postponement or final redesign. Jagex says its 2027 roadmap was created with current players in mind and now promises to bring the same attention to the next version of Reignited. Players should therefore distinguish confirmed facts from options that are still under discussion.
