Path of Exile 2: Forbidden Rites Starts September 4
Forbidden Rites will open as a separate event league with a fresh economy and exclusive challenge rewards. The FAQ also clarifies the launch time and Duelist schedule.

Path of Exile 2’s Forbidden Rites event league begins on September 4, 2026 at 1:00 PM PDT. The event opens alongside patch 0.5.5, and the game realm will be taken offline before deployment begins. Grinding Gear Games has not yet published the exact maintenance window, so players aiming to enter immediately should watch the official status channels as launch day approaches.
The clarification also confirms that Forbidden Rites is more than a small mechanic added to an existing realm. Everyone will begin again in a dedicated league environment. For organized groups, the remaining preparation time can be used to settle leveling routes, party roles and first-week objectives. Final patch notes may still alter skill balance or item priorities, so rigid build plans carry some risk.
A fresh economy changes early priorities
Forbidden Rites follows the familiar new-league model with a completely fresh economy. Existing characters, stored currency and established item supplies will not carry into the new competition. Prices for crafting materials, valuable bases and leveling equipment will therefore develop from zero. During the opening days, reliable resistance and defensive upgrades can matter more than expensive items that offer damage without enough survivability.
The league will also include a new set of challenges with exclusive rewards attached to their completion. Since the full challenge list is not available yet, players may benefit from keeping their plans flexible instead of committing to one costly item or narrow strategy. Early prices can move rapidly as supply grows, making it important to weigh a quick power increase against upgrades that remain useful deeper into progression.
Duelist is not part of patch 0.5.5
One of the FAQ’s clearest answers concerns the Duelist. The class will not be playable in patch 0.5.5 or at the beginning of Forbidden Rites. Its release remains tied to Path of Exile 2 version 1.0, currently scheduled for December 11, 2026. Anyone preparing for the September event must therefore choose from the available class roster and save Duelist-specific plans for the full launch.
This distinction keeps the event league separate from the game’s wider 1.0 roadmap. Forbidden Rites brings a meaningful content launch and an economy reset, but it does not complete the final class lineup. Players waiting for Duelist can still use the event to explore another class, although collecting speculative class-specific gear is best avoided until the developers publish definitive migration and item details.
What to check before the servers open
Before launch, players should review the 0.5.5 patch notes, the confirmed downtime and the complete event rules. Preparing a primary starter build and a cheaper fallback can reduce lost time if balance changes weaken a preferred skill. Parties can agree on loot distribution and crafting responsibilities in advance, while solo players may want dependable campaign routes that meet resistance requirements without relying on rare drops.
With its clean economy, Forbidden Rites offers returning players and regular competitors a clear point to start on equal footing. The opening market will nevertheless be volatile, and supplies of important equipment may remain thin for several days.
