Path of Exile 2 sets the stage for Forbidden Rites and the Duelist
Update 0.5.5 opens the Forbidden Rites event league on September 4. The Duelist will then join the roster with version 1.0 on December 11.
Update 0.5.5 now has a date and a clear focus
Grinding Gear Games has confirmed that Path of Exile 2 update 0.5.5 will launch on September 4, 2026 at 1 PM PDT. Its centerpiece is Forbidden Rites, a limited event league that gives players a separate progression route built around fresh objectives while they wait for the full 1.0 release.
The announcement does not yet include every mechanical change or balance number. Full patch notes are expected closer to release, during the following week. Players should therefore check the official notes before locking in a build; for now, the reveal establishes the update’s scope rather than providing the figures needed for detailed theorycrafting.
Forbidden Rites adds eight new challenges
Forbidden Rites will be the main playable feature of 0.5.5. The event league includes eight new challenges and exclusive rewards tied to them. That compact objective list offers a clear path for players who want more than a quick fresh start and prefer to measure their progress through defined milestones.
The unlock conditions for those rewards—and the way the event may influence its economy—should become clearer with the patch notes. Anyone preparing for launch can identify reliable early skill links and readily available equipment alternatives now. A starter that depends on one scarce item could be unnecessarily difficult before the new market settles.
The Trial of Chaos is receiving a major overhaul
The update is not limited to its event league. The Trial of Chaos will also receive a substantial rework. Since the trial is an important stop in character progression, this could mean noticeable changes to its pacing, encounter structure, or risk-versus-reward balance, although the developer has not yet detailed the exact adjustments.
Players should not assume that every current strategy will carry over unchanged. Those who use specialized defensive layers or item combinations specifically for the trial may want to delay expensive investments until the new rules are known. Whether the rework makes the content more approachable will become clearer once 0.5.5 is live and players can test it.
The Duelist joins the fight with version 1.0
The same presentation also looked further ahead. The long-awaited Duelist will become playable when Path of Exile 2 reaches its full 1.0 release on December 11, 2026, accompanied by a new weapon type. While 0.5.5 delivers a near-term event, the December release will permanently broaden the game’s character options.
It is still too early to judge the Duelist’s final skill balance or equipment synergies. Players considering a new melee-focused character may be better served by keeping their resources flexible until the 1.0 details arrive. Path of Exile 2 currency and items can also be traded securely on GameinShop with escrow protection, in line with platform rules.
