Operation Avalon has entered its closing stretch for EVE Online players. CCP has confirmed that the EVE Vanguard event will shut down at downtime on July 20, giving players a clear deadline to deploy, finish remaining objectives and take one last pass at the war fronts opened during the operation.
This is more than a simple end-date reminder. Patch 0.72 arrives alongside the final days of the event and changes the way Vanguard feels for squads that are still learning the extraction loop. Players jumping in late should find a mode that gives them more support at the start of a run and clearer signals about what they are supposed to do next.
Patch 0.72 lowers the entry barrier
The biggest practical change is the new default reclone for every squad in each deployment. That extra life does not remove risk, but it makes a single mistake less likely to end the entire attempt. For returning players, mixed groups or newcomers trying Vanguard before Avalon disappears, this should make the combat rhythm easier to read and less punishing during the first few runs.
Starting equipment is also less restrictive. Deployments now include free militia-grade variants of the Keshik, Praetorian and Flayer, which means players can test roles without spending too much time on preparation. The point is not to hand out top-tier power. It is to make the opening minutes cleaner, letting squads learn weapons, positioning and extraction timing before they commit deeper resources.
NPC behavior and tutorials get attention
Patch 0.72 also retunes NPC combat, reaction speed and movement. In an extraction-focused mode, those details matter. Enemy behavior decides when a squad feels pressured, how quickly a poor position gets punished and whether a firefight feels readable or chaotic. If the tuning lands well, PvE engagements should become easier to interpret without becoming trivial.
CCP has also added more tips and in-game tutorial support for expeditions and extraction. That matters because Vanguard is not only about aim. A successful deployment depends on knowing when to push, when to disengage and when to leave with what you have. Better guidance should help players who understand EVE Online but are still new to the structure of a ground-side extraction shooter.

Players who plan to join before Operation Avalon closes should treat the final days as a learning window, not only a reward chase. The free militia loadouts are useful for testing roles, while the squad reclone can be used to gather information more aggressively.
